During the summer 2024, CTI upgraded the link between Gradescope and Canvas (often called an LTI) from LTI 1.1 to 1.3. The 1.3 integration links Gradescope to Canvas more closely and has increased security among other behind-the-scenes improvements. One of the most noticeable changes is that when linking a Canvas course to Gradescope, Gradescope will no longer open up in a separate tab in your browser. It now opens “within” Canvas. Because this feature does reduce the amount of screen real estate you have to work with, please note that you can always go directly to Gradescoope.com and access your course from there. If you do, be sure to choose “log in” and then click on “School Credentials.” After you click on “Cornell NetID” from the list, you can log into Gradescope directly and go into your course this way.
Although users can set up assignments the same way that they did in the past, Gradescope does recommend a slightly different workflow. For more information on this new recommended workflow, see this Gradescope documentation.
If you do a course copy from semester to semester and have commonly reused External tool Assignment links from Canvas and linked them to your new course in Gradescope, you might want to create new links. If you commonly reused your assignments within Gradescope, Gradescope suggests duplicating your old Gradescope course and then relinking those assignments to your new Canvas course. More information can be found at this Gradescope page.
Finally, if you or your students find that the connection between Gradescope and Canvas is behaving strangely or inconsistently you may want to try using a different browser or clearing your browser cache. If you have used Gradescope in past semesters, your browser may have cached the LTI 1.1 cookie and when you try to link to a new Gradescope course or assignment that is now using LTI 1.3, inconsistent behavior can happen. Please reach out to CTI if you have any questions.
