In Fall 2025, the Center for Teaching Innovation (CTI) will pilot the use of the Respondus Lockdown Browser to help make sure that in-class Canvas exams and assignments can be protected from AI completion tools. Participation is open to any interested Cornell faculty. Register for the pilot here.

Before first using LockDown Browser for an assessment, we strongly recommend using the LockDown browser with a practice test quiz in order to identify any technical issues students may encounter when installing the custom browser on their devices.

Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser through which students taking a Canvas quiz have no access to any external materials on the testing device. Additionally, use of this browser prevents students from copying, pasting, taking screenshots, or printing materials while the browser is in use. Canvas quizzes utilizing the browser cannot be completed through any other type of browser.

For users involved in the Respondus pilot, in order to make LockDown Browser appear in the Course Navigation menu in Canvas, follow the instructions at Managing Course Navigation Links.
