For steps on how to change the links in the Canvas Course Navigation, see How do I manage Course Navigation Links? For a video about Navigation in general, see Introduction to Navigation.

As an instructor, you can control which links appear in Course Navigation for students. Canvas includes a set of Course Navigation links that are shown by default and set that are hidden (have a crossed-out eye). You can adjust which links are visible and which links are hidden, but you cannot adjust the names of these links. Depending on your course configuration, other links may be available and may be customizable.

tip indicator

It is important to think about which links to make available to students. Too many links can make a course cluttered and overwhelming.

Links to sections that don’t have any content and that students cannot create content for will automatically not be shown to students and will be faded in instructor view. For example, if there are no learning outcomes set for the course, you will see the faded Outcomes link, but students will not see the link at all.

Disabling a course navigation link creates the following redirects:

  • Hidden only (cannot be disabled but still accessible via direct URL): Discussions, and Grades
  • Page disabled; redirected to Home page: Announcements, Assignments, BigBlueButton (formerly Conferences), Collaborations, Files, Modules, Outcomes, Pages, People, Quizzes, and Syllabus
  • Page disabled; won’t appear in navigation: Any LTI links, such as Attendance, Chat, and SCORM
