The following are recommendations for avoiding grade discrepancies in Canvas.

✔ Do✘ Don't
  • Set a Missing Submission policy in the Gradebook to apply a 0 to unattempted quizzes, discussions, or Online Submission assignments. You will still need to manually apply a 0 to On Paper, No Submission, and External Tool assignments.

  • For New Quizzes, if there are any missing submissions in the Gradebook, go to the Moderate tab when editing the quiz and confirm those students are actually missing submissions. There is a glitch that can cause New Quizzes to not properly sync with the Gradebook on some occasions. If you find inconsistencies, please reach out to Canvas@Cornell.edu for assistance.

  • Put an Available Until date on any graded activities, otherwise submissions can come in until the end of the semester. This includes attempts that students have started on a quiz and never submitted (as these are auto-submitted at the semester end date).
  • Don't allow multiple attempts on a Graded Quiz in order to let the students study. It is better to create a Practice Quiz containing the same questions for study purposes. There is a glitch that can cause Late Submission policies to be applied to on-time submissions when there is one or more submission that is late.

  • Don't make assignments with point values of 0 when using weighted grading. If you end up giving students any points for 0 point assignments, the weighted grading will miscalculate and can make scores go over 100%.

  • Don't make copies of Canvas Quizzes using the Import -> Course Copy feature. To make copies, see How do I export quiz content from a course? or How do I import quizzes from QTI packages?.

  • Don't allow multiple graders to grade the same assignment at the same time in the SpeedGrader or Gradebook. It is possible to allow multiple users to grade via Gradescope at the same time though.

  • Don't make changes to quiz questions other than changing the correct answer selection on a Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer, or True/False question. Changes to other question types or questions linked to Question Banks, removal of questions, and/or changes in the point value of questions all require manual regrading of quizzes to calculate in the Gradebook properly. For more information, see What options can I use to regrade a quiz in a course?

  • Once submissions have been made to a quiz, assignment, or discussion, don't change which students to which the activity has been assigned. If you need to change availability or due dates for a student or group of students, you can use the +Add button under Assign To when editing an activity to add differentiated dates.
