Although Kaltura is available in Canvas, Panopto is the preferred tool for adding new videos to a course.

Using Kaltura, you can upload and share videos (including Zoom recordings) with students in your Canvas course. You don’t need to set up an account, it is automatically available to you in Canvas. This method of sharing video is FERPA compliant. These videos do not count against your Canvas file limit, and they are available in perpetuity.

Once you’re comfortable with Kaltura, try Editing Automatic Captions in Kaltura.

For more information about the differences between the Canvas and Video on Demand instances of Kaltura, see Comparison of Kaltura Instances: VOD and Canvas.

To make Kaltura’s My Media space available in your Canvas course, see How do I manage Course Navigation links? My Media is useful if you need to edit a video or the information about a video. If you are simply adding videos to Canvas, you can skip this process.

Accessibility Tips

  • Add synchronized captions to your videos. Kaltura automatically generates captions for videos with dialogue, but you have to fix all spelling, punctuation, and timing errors to be accessible.
  • Include a transcript for audio files (e.g., podcast, MP3, audio lecture, etc.)
  • Write a script before recording, and add a link to it below the video.
  • Use videos under 10 minutes.
  • Verbally describe the concepts conveyed by charts, graphs, props, and other visuals as they appear in the video.
  • If demonstrating a tool, do not rely on location, color, or shape when providing verbal instructions; e.g., instead of saying “click the red button”,  say, “click the submit button.”
