The Canvas Calendar tool brings together all assignment, quiz, and discussion due dates, non-graded events, and appointments that are booked through Canvas. It allows students to view everything they have to do for all of their courses (that are using the tool) in one place or to filter the calendar to see dates for specific courses. A calendar feed can even be exported to allow users to see their Canvas Calendar dates in their preferred calendar publisher.

Managing Events with the Calendar

Events are non-graded activities which can be added to Canvas’ Calendar. You can add events to your personal Canvas calendar or you can add events to a course calendar. Events added to a course calendar do not display on the Assignments page or in the Gradebook, but they do appear on the Syllabus page and on student calendars. The use of Events can help students to manage their time more efficiently and help you to clearly communicate scheduled activities related to a course.

Managing Appointments with the Scheduler

Scheduler is a Calendar tool that creates appointment groups within a course or group. Students can sign up for a time slot within the appointment group. Some appointment time slots may only allow one student to sign up at a time, while others may allow an entire group to sign up.

Only students can sign up for appointment slots in the Scheduler. If a student signs up for an appointment slot, an observer who is observing the student can view the appointment in the student’s calendar. Observers cannot sign up for an appointment on behalf of a student.

Scheduler is helpful for:

  • Creating office hours
  • Scheduling TA sessions
  • Scheduling lunches
  • Assigning presentation times
  • Hosting Student-Teacher conferences
  • Hosting other appointments
