How can I make the specific time of a quiz flexible while still limiting how much time they have to complete the quiz?

Gradescope helps instructors grade problem sets and other assignments more quickly and consistently while still allowing for detailed feedback. It helps standardize grading across sections and graders, particularly in large classes. If a grading rubric is changed, Gradescope will retroactively adjust assignments that have already been graded. It has detailed analytics that show where students might be struggling with a particular concept. It integrates with Canvas and the Gradebook, so grades can be easily exported to Canvas. For more information on how to use Gradescope see CTI’s Learning Gradescope page.

How do I give a student extra time on a quiz?

Once a quiz is published, you can use the Moderate Quiz option to provide a student extra time or extra attempts. For full details, see Once I publish a quiz, how do I use the Moderate Quiz page? If you are using Available From and Available Until to create an availability window, be sure the window allows for the total amount of extra time given for a student. This may require you to give that student separate Assign To settings.

Grading & Feedback

How do I update the automatic grading on a quiz after I change a question?

Quizzes can only be automatically regraded if you change the correct answer selection on a Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer, or True/False question. Changes to other question types or questions linked to Question Banks, removal of questions, and/or changes in the point value of questions all require manual regrading of quizzes to calculate in the Gradebook properly. For more information, see What options can I use to regrade a quiz in a course?

How come my students can’t see their quiz grades and/or feedback?

The visibility of grades and feedback come down to whether the Grades button has been enabled in the Course Navigation menu and the Grade Posting Policy being applied to the assignment being graded. If a Manual Grade Posting Policy has been applied to the assignment individually or because of a coursewide setting (the default in Canvas), the grades and feedback will not become visible until the policy is changed for that assignment or grades are posted. For full details, see Grade Posting Policies.

How do I make sure students do not see the questions or correct answers once they submit a quiz?

When you create a quiz, you have options you can enable for feedback. Do not check the option to let students see feedback if you do not want them to see the questions after they submit the quiz. If you want them to see the questions but not the correct results, check the option to let them view feedback, but leave the option to display correct answers un-checked.

How do I put automated feedback on quiz questions?

When you create questions in a quiz, you have options to leave feedback that will be shown to all participants, participants with the correct answer, and/or participants with the incorrect answer. In order to see this feedback, you must have chosen Let Students See Their Quiz Responses (the default setting) in the settings of the quiz and have posted the grades for the quiz or changed its Grade Posting Policy to Automatic. For full details, see Grade Posting Policies.

Miscellaneous

How do I make copies of a quiz in Canvas?

Making copies of quizzes via the Import Course Content -> Copy a Course feature will cause overwriting issues. In order to make copies, you will want to generate a QTI export file and then import that file. For full details, see Managing Quizzes on Getting Started with Canvas Quizzes.

Can I have one question pull from a bank of questions of a specific type and other questions pull from another bank?

Yes. You can have different Question Groups pull from different Question Banks. You just need to set up the banks so they contain the questions you want. You cannot connect one question group to multiple banks though. For more information, see Managing Quiz Questions and Managing Quiz Question Banks on Getting Started with Canvas Quizzes.

How do I test that my quiz is properly set up?

It’s recommended you test a quiz before students start taking it, especially for high-stakes exams. Preview mode allows you to see how the questions are presented to students; you can go through the questions and submit the quiz. Student View allows you to submit a quiz and see the submission for the Test Student in the Gradebook. In order to take a quiz as Test Student, you need to publish it without date restrictions AND enable Require an access code (in the quiz settings). This code will allow you to test the quiz, while keeping it secure from students. In Student View, when you click on the quiz, you’ll see the Take Quiz button; click it and you’ll be prompted to enter the required code.

If you would like to review quiz settings with CTI instructional designers, please contact us at Canvas@Cornell.edu to schedule a consultation.

What happens if there is a power outage or internet goes down during a quiz?

If students’ connection to a quiz is interrupted during a timed quiz, students will be able to restart the quiz any time before the quiz time ends without losing any of the answers already entered.

Why aren’t all of the video files in my quiz working?

The system can get bogged down by trying to load multiple videos on the same page at the same time. In the quiz settings, choose Show one question at a time to ensure the system isn’t overloaded.
